America’s best basketball team just made history by hiring its first female coach.

The San Antonio Spurs, winners of the National Basketball Association championships in 2014, have hired Becky Hammon as an assistant coach. The Spurs will be the first NBA team to pay a full-time female coach.

Lisa Boyer was part of the Cleveland Cavaliers staff between 2001 and 2002, but worked part-time and was not paid.

The 37-year-old Hammon has been named a WNBA All-Star six times during her career as a basketball player. She has played for the San Antonio Stars since 2007.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement:

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff. Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”
